Couch Potato Files Vol. 30

Happy Friday and long holiday Memorial Day weekend! This year continues to fly by. The holiday also means I’ll be making a big pot of beer cheese to celebrate.

Last Friday, May 15, was the first anniversary of my ma passing away. My hubby and I spent the day in Prescott, AZ, one of her favorite towns. She talked for years about moving there – she really loved it. And, she felt like it was closer to us but not too close, plus better temperatures. I took some of her ashes to the town square park and found an awesome rose bush, her favorite. We happened into a hot rod classic car show too – she loved them so. It was a really nice day and I’m glad we went.

My TV and movie viewing has been racking up again – so many shows and movies, so little time, even while I continue to look for a new job.  But, I’m doing my best and doing it all for you so you have plenty of options to choose from.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War – Prime

I think Tom Clancy would dig that John Krasinski has become a really great Jack Ryan. He honors the character really well, even though Harrison Ford still remains the very best. This movie was awesome and hopefully they’ll make more. If you haven’t watched the series too, there’s four seasons to binge all holiday weekend so get on it – you won’t regret it!

The Boroughs – Netflix, Season 1

A brand new Netflix drop just yesterday and I’ve already finished it! It was really fun. Stranger Things’ Duffer brothers are the executive producers and it feels a lot like nostalgic sci-fi from the 80s. I loved it for that. Great cast too!

The Boys – Prime, Season 1 – 5

The series finale was this week and the show went out with a bang! Such a wild awesome show from start to finish – there really isn’t much else on TV like it. If you need something to binge entirely over the long weekend, this is it!

Top Gun & Top Gun Maverick – in theaters and streamers

The 40th Anniversary of the OG was May 13 and both movies were in the theater for one week only. Really fun swag too, depending on what theater you went to. I got an awesome Maverick helmet popcorn bucket, a great cup and a poster. We saw it in IMAX which is the best for any kind of high-action flicks. I think I’ve seen the OG about a thousand times, along with listening to the soundtrack tape until it nearly wouldn’t function. I also drug anyone I could to the theater to see the sequel and will do it again when the third comes out – yes! They’re making another one! This movie is about as nostalgic as it gets for me – top of the heap! Feel the need for speed…AGAIN!

Dutton Ranch – Paramount+, Season 1

Probably the show I’ve been most excited about, even though I feel like I love a lot of new shows. But, this one is the latest spinoff for Yellowstone with my two very favorite characters up to mayhem once again. It’s starting off as a slow burn but I can see the potential. Any time Beth Dutton is involved there’s always a high chance for crazy fun. A couple episodes are out already and the rest come out every Friday. Yeehaw!

Off Campus – Prime, Season 1

My hubby teases me that I watch a lot of young adult shows. This one is definitely that and I was reading this week why I’m so drawn to them – they’re a lot like the shows I used to watch when I was younger, like Dawson’s Creek and Felicity. Just a new wave of them for new generations…and old Gen Xers like me too! This one is based on a series of books, hockey romance books. That sport is hot for teacher right now with the popularity of Heated Rivalry so I can see the appeal to keep making more shows with the sport as the center piece. All episodes out now and Season 2 is already greenlit.

Marty, Life is Short – Netflix

Martin Short is a comedic legend. One of the funniest there ever has been. This documentary is so well done and full of his legendary friends too. I loved it!

Remarkably Bright Creatures – Netflix

I’ve been on a real reading roll and made sure to finish this book before I watched the movie. Sally Field is back in what seems like a very long time, starring in this awesome movie. Lewis Pullman is really excellent too. And the octopus can’t be beat!

Kevin Hart’s Roast – Netflix

I was excited for this and it was alright – not as great as the Tom Brady roast two years ago but there were some great comedians, including Kevin of course…and The Rock too. Nikki Glaser wasn’t there and it was obvious – she would have destroyed. But Chelsea Handler did pretty great at taking her place.

Citadel – Prime, Season 1 – 2

I didn’t think this show was going to come back, after they did some other spinoffs that sort of flopped but here it was for Season 2. Seeing Stanley Tucci as a badass spy is pretty excellent. The rest of the cast is too and some newcomers that were really great too.

It’s Not Like That – Prime, Season 1

Scott Foley as a pastor?! Okay! Any of the former Felicity cast are always on my radar so when I saw that this finally showed up on Prime, after being on some religious network, I gave it a shot. It’s really good! Grab your tissue because it’s pretty sad but it’s a great watch. Season 2 isn’t definite yet but I’m sure Prime watchers will help it get seen more!

Enjoy couch-potatoing! I know I always do! Thanks for reading and watching.

Couch Potato Files Vol. 29

Happy May and Cinco de Drinko! Pretty fun it fell on a Taco Tuesday, too. We’ve all been training for this for years. May’s stacked with milestone dates to give me all the feels. Mother’s Day will be the first without my ma but I’m lucky to be celebrating it with my fam and my sweets who made me a mama 19 years ago. And, May 15th is the anniversary of my ma passing away. A year sure flew by in most ways and in others, it feels like I just lost her. My therapist talks about year two being harder than the first so I’m hoping for the best but bracing myself for the worst. My ma loved a good margarita so I’ll be toasting to her today at our favorite taco joint.

In other happier news, I’m heading to LA this weekend to meet up with my bestie. We’ve been besties since we met at eight so we’re celebrating 40 years of friendship and going to laugh our asses off at the Netflix is a Joke Fest. I’m really looking forward to seeing her and having the best time together.

My TV and movie watching list is also growing again so be ready for more posts like this throughout May!

Kentucky Roses – Hallmark Channel & Hallmark+

Perfect timing with the Derby drop this past Saturday. Loved it! Really cute story and all set in Louisville at the track.

Hacks – HBO Max, Season 1 – 5

The fifth and final season is happening right now with a new episode (sometimes two) every Sunday. I’m going to miss this show so much. It’s so well-written and the cast is fantastic. I know since they ended it on their own terms it will wrap up great for the fans. The final episode is already almost here at the end of May. Cue the tears!

Margo’s Got Money Troubles – Apple TV, Season 1

This show is based on a book and wow, it’s a ton of fun. Great cast and story. Love every week’s episode and the build it’s had. I also love that Michelle Pfeiffer is everywhere on my screen again – I love her!

Beef – Netflix, Season 1 – 2

An anthology series with a new cast each season but the same dark comedy vibe. I will say I think Season 1 was better or rather tough to top but Season 2’s cast was pretty awesome.

From – MGM+, Season 1 – 4, greenlit for Season 5

I wish this show was on a bigger network or streamer because I’m sure not enough people are finding it. But it’s already greenlit for yet another season so I guess it’s doing just fine. It’s out weekly and has a very Lost vibe to it but with more horror. It’s really great.

Running Point – Netflix, Season 1 – 2

Kate Hudson is back for another season and it was perfect timing that it dropped during the NBA playoffs. Really fun feel-good comedy that’s always got a Ted Lasso vibe.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 – theaters

It’s been twenty years and this sequel was a ton of fun. So glad all the original core cast was back – it wouldn’t have been worth it if they weren’t. Lots of Easter eggs for the fans and new ones too. So many celeb cameos too!

Man on Fire – Netflix, Season 1

This new show had big shoes to fill since the Denzel movie was wonderful. And I gotta say, the show is really good! Hoping it comes back for another season!

Widow’s Bay – Apple TV, Season 1

A horror comedy and wow, is it ever. Really, really great. Matthew Rhys starring is always TV gold it seems. Everything you read about this is that it’s got a Stephen King vibe and they’re all correct. It’s awesome!

Apex – Netflix

A highlight for me was seeing Charlize scale a rockwall in Time Square and reach the top of her big outdoor board advertisement, yelling down to everyone to watch her new movie. It was a wild ride and I’m convinced that Taron Egerton plays a psycho really well and will keep getting those roles. What a crazy man!

Enjoy some tacos and margs and thanks for reading!
